Cortes essays

Cortes papers Cortes: The Life of the Conqueror was composed by Cortes associate, pastor, and secretary, Francisco Lopez de Gomara. The content, an epic written in an elegant style that will in general at the same time specify and sum up the introduced achievements, follows the life of Hernan Cortes, quickly addressing his initial life and spending the dominant part of its pages itemizing the adventurers different successes in Mexico. The creator, since he was a partner, counselor, and secretary to Cortes, and was likewise a common minister, can be supposed to be one-sided towards the glorification of his subject, with whom he was associated, what's more, against the local occupants, in his heartfelt denial of the indigenous populaces culture and society. His perspective is one of over the top deference blended in with the sureness that Cortes each activity was roused by everyone's benefit of Christianizing the new land. The sources utilized by Gomara can be thought to be a blend of direct reports from Cortes, memories, reproductions of occasions of which he was not an immediate onlooker, and letters and receipts. As I would like to think, the book is a impressive verifiable report that broadly expounds, but at the same time is an introduction of a chronicled perspective that sees the unitizing power of a Christian God to be its definitive objective, and along these lines, however it might list physiological and structural portrayals of non- Christian societies, it in any case fills no other need than to deride them, while guaranteeing the peruser that the activities of its chivalrous hero were generally just. In any case, the history is entirely comprehensible, is now and again entertaining, and doesn't stay away from the intricate introduction of detail frequently found in epic verse, of which it reminded Gomara portrays Cortes youth quickly, expressing that he was a fiery kid who looked for riches and brilliance by heading out to the ... <!

Nightmarket

Nightmarket On Friday, my friend Weywey 06 (Course 2: Mechanical Engineering) and I went to Harvard Square for some errands and dinner. Weywey dug through this entire bin of orange, red, and green markers until she found the one blue Sharpie in the entire thing. These folders were on sale for 18 cents each! Needless to say, I was thrilled. (I bought 12.) Unfortunately, one was a casualty of some rainy weather today. Anyway, back to Harvard Square. Weywey and I ate at Penang, on the second floor of the Staples building. You cant see it from this picture, but theres a great view out over the shops. After dinner, we visited the Harvard Book Store I bought the book Wigfield, written by Amy Sedaris, Paul Dinello, and Stephen Colbert (its French, bitch). Then we took the #1 bus back to MIT for Nightmarket. This event is co-sponsored by lots of cultural groups across campus, including AAA (Asian American Association), CSC (Chinese Students Club), and ATS (Association of Taiwanese Students). There were tons of activities at this event, and unfortunately I got photos of very few. They had raffles, carnival games, massages, orgami, fortune-telling, henna-painting, arts and crafts, mahjong, and much more. We each paid $2 to get in, and were handed 5 meal tickets. In addition to these, Bryan 07 gave me 3 extra tickets, so I knew I had my work cut out for me. We decided to stick only to dessert, and had some honeydew jello, bean stew over rice, green tea ice cream, red bean ice cream, flan, and a lychee pastry. No almond tofu fruit salad this year =( Here, my friend Ricarose 06 (Course 6: Electrical Engineering Computer Science) volunteers at the FSA (Filipino Students Association) booth. heres my friend Maya 06 (Course 7: Biology), a member of MIT Hapa, a group for students of mixed background. Task 2 Strategic planning is an organizational management activity which helps to set priorities, strengthen operations, and to ensure that employees work towards the goals to achieve success. An effective strategic planning articulates not only where and what actions needed to make progress, but also how it will know if it successful. In order to implement success strategic planning need to follow the performance of operational management. Operational management is essential for all organizations. The strategic planning mostly deals with activities of any business organizations such as operations, sales, finance concerned with different level managers. Operational management is focused with the production / services provider level of organizations. There are three stages of strategic planning. They are known as Economy, Efficiency and Effectiveness. To achieve the profit margin Swann has introduced the stationeries targeting the teenagers and young women. WH Smith started to sell station eries and sweets at the checkouts. This is a good example that Swann has used one of the strategic planning elements known as Economy. As it is essential assign that right resources has been used at the right time at the right place and right cost which a management should consider in business objectives. In other hand WH Smith has the big online strategy Funky Pigeon where they work in very cost effective. à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Swann announced she was pulling out of selling music and DVDsà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ , she has compared the market and in order to increase the profit margins. And the comparison stores such as HMV thinks that ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s brave. As she consider the Efficiency, she has compared the performance target she kept to increase the profit of WH Smith. Even though WH Smith has its high street retail it has target the online retailers by introducing Funky Pigeon card site. Effectiveness is determined by examining the objectives and achievement of a company. WH Smith was be en losing by 135m due to Swannà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s strong operational management the company has turn into profit of  £106m. Quality is very important for an organization. An example of good quality product with less cost is when a customer who consumes the product and services has nothing or less to complain about the product. In the scenario it says à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“WH Smith now sells roughly  £65 of goods for every  £100 of customà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ the success is they have carefully reviews the objectives. WH Smith has to review the existing products carefully in order to compare the function of the product required by the customer, who demands them in lower cost. Kate Swann has carefully reviewed and decided that selling of Music and DVDà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s are not profitable and not worth of reducing cost. So she completely stopped selling DVDà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s and started introducing new ideas on selling new products in WH Smith. They target certain age grou p to boost their sales. As we can see in the scenario that it says the teenagers and the young woman have been aimed for stationeries. What Kate Swann has done leads WH Smith for its success. Following the performance objective it helps to add value to the customers in delivering quality products or services. The Quality, speed, dependability, flexibility and the cost may defer as performance objectives. Quality services as known as error-free services. There may be no any complains about the product satisfaction. This can be improved by getting customers feedbacks. For example if we take WH Smith the quality can defer as the store cleanliness, an appropriate and attractive outlet and also very friendly and helpful staff so the customer may like to visit the store often. It also includes the goods conditions. As we see WH Smith has a big online strategy Funky Pigeon card site. If they fail to deliver their customers goods on time, they may have bad viewpoint against their service s and none of the customers like to continue doing shopping with them. When we look at the WH Smith store it all depends on a customer asking for a product or services and getting it to them, in another word satisfactory of their shopping in WH Smith. As we see in the scenario it says that Swann plans to open more shops which are stuffed with stock and screaming promotional banners. This is a role of operational management to achieve as ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s based on dependability. It increases the product or service in the market. WH Smith has sold stationary targeting the teenagers and young women and they also started to display sweets at the checkout make customers to purchase them. If they have not been flexible in introducing new lines to their sales they will not be able to achieve success in their business. Swann also cuts down the cost in order to boost her profit margins. These are the importance five performance objectives that underpin operation managements. Task 3 For a good operational planning is very important, this will lead the organizations to know what they have to do next, in order to deliver best services to the customerà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s demand. Planning and controlling related to each other. It is essential to consider these methods in an organization like WH Smith as they helps for the effective outcome. Planning helps what to do and when to do in other hand controlling involves making sure that the plans are taken place. The planning and controlling involves cost estimation, work measurement, planning, routine concerns. Based on this scenario we can see that WH Smith has planned how to fulfill the needs of their customers. Kate Swann for example knew that young women and teenagers will purchase their stationeries and mean time the sweet has been display near the counter in order to promote it to their clients. If Kate Swann didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t think of what customers normally demand, WH Smith may not be able to satisfy thei r customers. Linear program is a mathematical technique designed to help to plan and make decisions. This will help to maximize or minimize some quantities such as profits or cost. Liner program requires action on what to choose, where Kate Swann need to introduce displaying sweets near the checkout. One of the examples of WH Smith success in applying linear program in operational management is when Kate Swann stops selling music and DVDs to increase the profit margin. For renovating WH Smith shops there are certain tasks need to be planned. The following table is the tasks listed down for the shop renovation. Activity Duration A Structure repair 4 B Ceiling 2 C Flooring 4 D Electrical Power require 1 E Main Shop area tidy 3 F Exterior Walls repair 2 G Paint outside 1 H Check out area 1 I Shelf 2 J Alarm 1 D must follow A G must follow A and F H must follow A, C, D and F I must follow A, C and E J must follow A and D The above network diagram is an for an WH Smith renovation. WH Smith was running with lose until Swann take over to make it a profit. When we look into the operational outcomes we can see clearly that the WH Smith lose of  £135m turned into profit of  £106m. Another example of operational outcome is targeting of displaying sweets at the checkout and also selling stationery aiming teenagers and young women. Quality can defined by the process through which a business seeks to make sure that the product quality is maintained or improved meantime reduces the errors. It requires both management and employees make every effort for perfection. And according to the Scenario it sets an example Kate Swann stops selling music and DVDs and also the checkout assistants attempt to force-feed the chocolates displayed at the checkout areas. Without planning and controlling an organization will be hard to monitor. It is essential to follow the concepts of Operational mana gement in order to achieve success in an organization. Kate Swannà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s success is based on how she followed the operation management skills in order to bring the profit to a company which was running in loss. As Kate Swann follows these skill it states in the scenario that she has the ability to make a unpleasant shops to have profit business. Novel Chronicle Of A Death Foretold English Literature Essay Free Essays

The secret plan of Chronicle of a Death Foretold revolves around Santiago Nasars decease and events taking up to his ghastly slaying. The writer seems to utilize both animate and inanimate objects to show symbolism that could convey important subjects. This essay will place and analyse certain scenes where objects have specific symbolism. We will write a custom essay sample on Novel Chronicle Of A Death Foretold English Literature Essay or any similar topic only for you Order Now The narrative is by South American writer named Gabriel Garcia Marquez who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1982. Marquez was born in the tropical town of Aracataca in northern Colombia in 1928. He grew up with his maternal grandparents who were important in his development. His gramps in peculiar, shaped Marquez ‘s political and ideological positions. A cardinal factor possibly associating to this novel is the gramps ‘s occasional words to Marquez that â€Å" you can non conceive of how much a dead adult male weighs † . Marquez attended college to analyze jurisprudence but subsequently he worked as a journalist in New York, Paris, and Barcelona. In the first portion of the novel, there is an copiousness of prefiguration and symbolism. The first scene is Santiago Nasar ‘s dreams. The supporter ‘s female parent, Placida Linero, states in the really first page that he was â€Å" ever woolgathering about trees † . Trees are normally interpreted otherwise by persons but it seems to be a representation of a individual. For illustration, a healthy green tree would typify a individual who is accomplishing success or a individual ‘s physical and mental strength. The storyteller provinces in page seven that â€Å" he besides learned the good art of heroism and prudence † , the supporter ‘s steadfast strength of head and his ability to train himself could propose grounds that he had dreamt large green trees. The trees could besides portray the male parent, as he was a important other in Santiago Nasar ‘s life before he died, proposing that Santiago misses his male parent or has fond memories of him. The hebdomad before his decease, Santiago had another dream about trees, his female parent informs the storyteller that Santiago had told her â€Å" he was entirely in a tin foil aeroplane and was winging through Prunus dulcis trees without knocking into anything † ( p4 ) . Possibly the Prunus dulcis tree in Santiago ‘s dream could typify people of Colombia and the scene of the narrative, which is a little coastal town in Colombia. Possibly the writer chose Prunus dulcis trees to stand for his South American beginning and civilization. Almonds normally have a chocolate-brown colour and it seems to resemble the skin colour of South Americans. The tin foil aeroplane could stand for ignorance, as he was unaware of what inevitable wretchedness awaited him. He was besides winging entirely and queerly non knocking into the Prunus dulcis trees. This could farther propose that the people in his town had known about the secret plan to slay him but Santiago was incognizant of this danger because ironically, his slaying secret plan was a chief chitchat amongst the townsfolk yet Santiago was entirely non being informed of the danger. The strong presence of ignorance likely shows itself in this first dream. Santiago Nasar ‘s female parent recalls the inside informations of his dream the dark before he was murdered. She states that he dreamt he was traveling through a tree where a soft mizzle was falling, she farther states that he was happy in his dream but woke up â€Å" splattered with bird crap † . Sing that this novel was translated from Spanish to English, the word â€Å" crap † could be used otherwise in the two linguistic communications. Possibly in Spanish it could be a less awful word and could merely intend the dungs of fecal matters. In English, the word â€Å" crap † has a really strong and coarse significance normally used in general society as a really bad word even though it still refers to the same definition as the Spanish significance. The writer could hold used similar footings to replace the word â€Å" shit † but he might hold used a stronger more coarse word to convey to the reader how much problem Santiago Nasar was in. Trees used for bring forthing lumber are normally associated with comfortable life of an person or peaceable surrounding. Possibly it could typify success, the storyteller ‘s sister explains how he was rich and fine-looking but there was no strong grounds to demo these features of Santiago. The supporter was happy but all of a sudden found himself covered in bird dungs, the bird dungs were non in his dream but hold symbolism excessively. Bird dungs normally mean that there is failure of an person who is about reaching success but falls short. The bird dropping could stand for his slaying, he fails to be cognizant of the danger and avoid being killed. The 2nd scene bearing symbolic significance is the bishop ‘s visit to the town. Possibly this scene holds a batch of symbols of faith, particularly Christianity. In page 21, it states that â€Å" people were excessively excited with the bishop ‘s visit to worry about any other intelligence † , proposing another symbol of ignorance, people were willing to happen the bishop ‘s visit more of import so they did non trouble oneself to recognize another adult male ‘s life was in danger. Disappointingly the bishop did non acquire off the boat as everyone turned up aroused to run into him ; some came to be healed while other people brought well-fattened cocks and firewood as a manner of idolizing a holy figure in the Catholic faith. The delivery of fertile animate beings and workss to idolize a holy figure was used in the Christian Old Testament, a manner of worship. Today, Christians normally worship God straight by praying. The fertile offering brought to the bishop suggests that early Catholic ‘s still practiced worshipping by offering forfeits to holy figures trusting that blessing would be bestowed upon them. It could farther typify the South American civilization of the 1900 ‘s and besides typify faith. It could be identified from the two scenes that the objects have a really important function in typifying certain subjects or thoughts.Maybe these symbols are being used in an effort by the writer to convey the subjects and thoughts to the readers. There are certain major subjects that seem to look from both scenes. A really obvious subject is ignorance ; this is displayed by the supporter himself who was unaware of the baleful sign of his dreams and his failure to larn from others that his life was in danger. His female parent, in a manner, could hold shown ignorance by non seeking to understand the boy ‘s dreams. The female parent had a well-earned repute of construing dreams provided the dreams were told to her before she eats. This could propose that the female parent has been making this for a certain period of clip and she should hold besides gained experience of construing dreams. Unfortunately, she was non able to construe the boy ‘s dream. Possibly the female par ent did non hold a strong mother-son relationship with Santiago or she could non hold been bothered to try and detect the representation of her boy ‘s dreams. The townsfolk besides displayed ignorance when they made a determination that the bishop ‘s visit was deemed as more of import than seeking to salvage another adult male ‘s life. They had cognition of what awful event awaited Santiago but none of the town ‘s people warned Santiago himself. Another major subject that appears in both scenes is faith. The novel was written during a clip when most South American states were Catholic, the writer might hold shown inside informations of how the Catholics behaved in society and how they worshipped God or the cardinal figures in the faith. For illustration, Catholics believed that the virginity of adult females should be preserved until matrimony and this was shown with Angela Vicario in the novel. Angela Vicario was the female in the narrative who had lost her virginity before matrimony and was rejected by Bayardo San Roman. She so accused Santiago Nasar of doing her impure and this lead to Angela ‘s brothers, Pablo and Pedro, plotting to slay Santiago. The construction and the secret plan of the novel seem to be fragmented. Information is given to the readers about the character but non plenty to wholly analyse each one of them. The narrative is really cryptic and journalistic in a manner that there are no definite replies to the events happening in the novel. This could reflect the writer himself as he had antecedently worked as a journalist in many states. This journalistic manner of authorship could hold been adapted to his novels, this gives the novel a more entertaining position to the reader. The reader will hold to suit the narrative together and make up one’s mind on their ain decision. I enjoyed reading this book because of its copiousness of subjects and how it was like a detective narrative. The writer besides seems to typify his civilization utilizing the objects in the text. People find themselves discriminating others on the grounds of religion, ethnicity, language, physical location, sexual relations, educational background etc. Multicultural competency is an aspect that tries to coun ter the cultural differences issues by teaching on the spirit of appreciating other cultures irrespective of the differences that prevail. Multicultural Competency in Psychology It is natural to develop strong personal ethnicity and identity as one grows from childhood to adulthood. Although this is inevitable, it is usually good to learn and appreciate others by developing an inclusive identity and perception. Psychologists are faced with the problem of cultural differences since they deal with a wide variety of people each with different ways of life. The psychologist should be able to learn and understand the minds of people and try to identify where people behave the way they do as the job requires. A psychologist should be cautious and sensitive in his or her practice with an understanding that there are differences in the ways of life of people and hence they should be treated differently to avoid offending them. The American Psychological Association (APA) has set guidelines on how the psychologists and other related professionals should carry out their duties in regard to multicultural issues. The principles stresses that psychologists should at all times act as leaders of social justice and foster fairness by avoiding discrimination of any kind (Constantine and Derald, 2005). Biases, Perceptions, Attitudes, and Beliefs towards Culturally Different Groups Apart from the fact that psychologists have undergone training on their career aspects they are faced with the problem of cultural differences in their practices. As a psychologist I am bound to have biases, attitude, and beliefs towards people of different cultures. This is because I have my individuality and may find myself treating people of a different cultural background differently.Advertising Looking for research paper on psychology? I may also find myself discriminating on the basis of language by treating those that we share common language features better than those whose languages are quite different due to the ease of communication between us. Another cultural issue that would put me into a dilemma is the gender as I tend to perceive women as weak species and hence would treat them with much sensitivity and care than men with the same problem. Religion is another area of concern. I would tend to have biases between Christians and Muslims as I know much on Christianity than I do on the Muslim religion. Influence of Attitudes or Perceptions on Interaction with Individuals Who Are Culturally Different Attitudes or perceptions have great influence on how one interacts with people of different cultures. A psychologist should try as much as possible to be objective in his or her practices. I would find myself interacting well and comfortably with those whose culture are same or simi lar to mine due to the similarities in beliefs and other aspects of life. It becomes quite hard to interact with people for example with whom you don’t share a common language since foreign languages are not usually easy and some aspects are better explained using a certain language, for instance, mother tongue or national language. Knowledge on the Values, Practices, and Experiences of Individuals Who Are Culturally Different It is always a good idea to have some understanding of different beliefs and practices of various cultures to ease in interaction and handling of various aspects of life. The knowledge of different cultures helps psychologists understand their roles and be more sensitive on multicultural issues. Good knowledge of cultural differences avoids the mistake of assumption of issues due to ignorance and hence treating a person or a situation differently. I do have some knowledge though not much on values and practices of different cultures, for instance, I und erstand the differences between Islamic and Christian communities, such as, on the way women are treated and the powers they are given. Strengths and Weaknesses in Interacting With Culturally Different Individuals, And Ways of Addressing the Shortcomings I consider my ability to learn about other cultures easily as strength. Learning of other cultures helps understand why people behave the way they do making coping with their behavior easy. It also help understand the origin of problems people suffer and help solve them rightfully since some of them are as a result of their social environments and their perceptions of aspects.Advertising We will write a custom research paper sample on Multicultural Competency in Psychology specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More My weakness is ignorance of certain aspects of other cultures. One way of overcoming my shortcoming is by identifying my personal biases and looking for ways to change from with in myself, accepting the diversity of culture and the fact that we can never be one. This will improve interaction and treatment given to others irrespective of their cultural differences. It will also be my responsibility to try and be flexible and willing to integrate with diverse cultures through commitment and hard work in learning the values, behaviors, and languages of various communities to ease interaction. It is also advisable to identify and acquire knowledge on various ethnic groups and races. As a psychologist one should adhere to the code of ethics that govern the profession especially in counseling to ensure that there is no discrimination on cultural differences or other factors (Corey, Corey, and Callan, 2007).
